In 2013, with the world already put on notice by the runaway success of the Kia Soul, Kia proved that it had more surprises in store when it unveiled the Kia Provo concept at that year’s Geneva Motor Show. Three years later, it looks like the Kia Provo may yet make its way from the concept stage to production, putting it in your New Haven Kia dealer for the 2018 model year. That’s welcome news to all of us at Executive Kia.

In some ways, the Kia Provo shares its DNA with the Kia Soul. Both feature unconventional designs. Both appeal to drivers who want utility but not predictability. There’s even something of a resemblance in profile. But there are also striking differences. The front fascia loses the iconic Kia tiger nose grille in favor of a sculpted look, featuring pronounced air intakes that wouldn’t be out of place on a fighter plane. That look continues throughout the car, culminating in a back end that looks ready for takeoff. The interior is similarly futuristic, with a leather bench seat that wouldn’t be out of place at the Museum of Modern Art.

Specs haven’t been released, so we can’t be sure how much of the concept will make it into production, nor what will be under the hood when it does. What we have a somewhat better idea of is where the vehicle fits into the Kia lineup. As a subcompact crossover, it would likely draw sales from the Kia Rio and Kia Forte5 hatchback as well as some people who might otherwise be drawn to the Kia Soul.

A mid-cycle redesign of the Kia Soul (about which we’ll have more in the days ahead) will be shown at the end of 2016 or beginning of 2017. We would expect the new subcompact crossover to be announced around the same time, or shortly after. And while we’re excited to be able to offer yet another fantastic Kia vehicle to our New Haven customers, we would remind you that we already have a formidable lineup — including the 2016 Kia Optima — here at the Executive Kia showroom at 1164 North Colony Rd in Wallingford, CT.
